携帯型MP3プレイヤーを世界で初めて開発、市場投入した国である韓国は、ブロードバンドとWebサイトの発達とともに、さまざまな形でMP3が活用され、プレイヤーも数多く出回っている。現在、韓国でのMP3プレイヤーの普及台数は約400～500万台。人口比率で言うと、約10人に1人がMP3プレイヤーを持っていることになる。一般的な使い方としては、日本と同じように音楽鑑賞が主だが、このほか学習用に使われることも多い。語学学習サイトなどでダウンロードした講義音源や、録音した外国語のラジオ放送を聴くといった利用も韓国ではオーソドックスな方法だ。
